Discover an unspoiled wilderness in the Gantrisch region between Schwarzenbühl and Ottenleue. In 1999, Storm Lothar swept across large parts of Europe, bringing with it fear and devastation. The Gägger forest was left almost entirely uprooted by the most violent storm to hit the country in the last century.
Today, visitors can walk across boardwalks and marvel at nature’s incredible healing power. Offering impressive views of the Gantrisch mountain chain, the 250m long Gäggersteg wooden walkway is flanked by trees and bushes and ascends from ground level to a height of eight metres. Visitors can observe from a height how nature has recovered after the storm. Nowhere else in Switzerland has an area of destroyed forest been left to recover on its own in this manner and yet been made accessible to all – a unique natural experience.
The family trail is an easy circular hike around the Gäggersteg. The accompanying story “Wild Türst – a stormy game on the Gägger” leads families to eight stations dotted along the wild trail. At each of these stations, children can collect a rune, with all eight spelling out the answer to the game. A prize awaits anyone with the correct answer.
Getting here: From the car park at the Süftenen shelter, follow the signs for the Gäggersteg. The Gäggersteg forms part of the spectacular Gantrisch Panorama Trail.
