Intro

The gentle lapping of the waves, the first warming rays of the sun and the sound of the birds’ dawn chorus: canoeing is the ideal way to discover the Grande Cariçaie nature reserve on Lake Neuchâtel during the summer months.

The Grande Cariçaie, Switzerland’s largest lakeshore wetland, looks completely different when you are actually on Lake Neuchâtel. A canoe expedition in the company of a naturalist promises to be a completely new way to experience nature. With a clear view unobstructed by trees or reeds, visitors can get up close and personal with nature, enjoying the sight of a cormorant in flight, admiring the nest of a great crested grebe or watching the rhythmic movements of a family of red-crested ducks. The Grande Cariçaie is 40km long, and its 3,000 hectares are home to a quarter of Switzerland’s flora and fauna. Many rare species, some unique to Switzerland or severely threatened in Europe, have the perfect habitat here.

The guided experience is available on fixed dates in July and August. Group bookings for the experience can be made on request from June to September. The tour starts and ends in Estavayer-le-Lac, at the Alphasurf watersports centre, Nouvelle Plage. The two-hour discovery tour led by an experienced naturalist begins at 9 a.m., with a maximum of eight canoes. Visitors can paddle their own canoe or rent one on site.

After the canoe tour, it is well worth spending some time on one of the beautiful sandy beaches on the southern shore of Lake Neuchâtel.
