In the place where the machine factory, Maschinenfabrik Oerlikon (MFO), once stood, an architecturally fascinating park hall bears witness to the past usage of the site. Particularly in summer, the facility is frequently used for various cultural events, such as open-air movie theatres or festivals of all kinds.
Up until the 1990s, Oerlikon was characterised by industrial buildings. The land where the park is now was used by Maschinenfabrik Oerlikon (MFO) for around a hundred years. The “Park-Haus” is covered by a latticework steel construction that is enveloped by greenery and open on three sides, which reflects the dimensions of the former factory building.
It is double-walled and zinc-coated and enveloped by sumptuously sprawling plants which are supported by wires. The Virginia creeper gives rise to a fabulous play of colours in autumn, while in summer visitors are greeted by verdant green foliage. The flights of steps and projecting balconies invite passers-by to stroll through the multi-award-winning construction and linger awhile. At the very top, on the roof, is a sun deck, offering views of the surrounding buildings in the new urban district of Zurich-Nord.
