Climb the steep stairs of the mediaeval city gate Spalentor and discover one of the city's most famous landmarks. The climb is well worth the effort and the views across the roof-tops of the Old Town are simply wonderful. A quick breather on each level gives you the opportunity to learn more about the city's defence works and the history of this splendid structure. By the way, the Spalentor has the highest open-air toilet in Basel.
