Cardiac surgery: coronary bypass/heart valve replacement
Diseases and injuries to the heart, either congenital or acquired, as well as the blood vessels surrounding the heart, are dealt with in the specialty of cardiac surgery.
The most commonly performed procedures include coronary artery bypasses and heart valve operations. Malformations, pathological vessel widenings (aneurysms) and the use of heart assist devices also require surgical interventions. A distinction is essentially made between surgery on the open heart and on the closed heart.
Finally, all heart transplants also fall under the remit of cardiac surgery.
