Winery Salenegg Castle
Overview
Intro
Winery and Castle Salenegg are inextricably linked. Since 1068 prized wines are grown, harvested and processed naturally in one of Europe’s oldest wineries.
As early as 950 A.D., the abbot of Pfäfers Monastery laid the foundation for the present castle and vineyard. The mighty wooden wine press (Torkelbaum), which dates from the year 1656, is closely linked with the history of the von Gugelberg family of Castle Salenegg.
Today, the estate combines traditional and modern methods: in addition to the traditional Pinot Noir, which has been vinified at Schloss Salenegg for many generations, they now produce other Pinot Noirs in a variety of styles, as well as white wines made from Chardonnay and PIWI varieties such as Cabernet Blanc and Sauvignac. Since 2000, the factory in the adjoining building has also been producing various types of delicate vinegar and cold-pressed oil.
A visit is a must! The team at Schloss Salenegg will be delighted to guide you through the history of the castle. During a guided tour of the cellar, you'll discover how wine production methods and tools have evolved over the last few centuries, and what steps are needed to go from harvest to finished wine.
