Walliser Sonnenweg
Overview
Intro
Scenic high-level trail with panoramic views of the Valais Alps and views down into the Rhone Valley. Variety of attractions along the route: thermal spa in Leukerbad, viaducts on the Lötschberg-Südrampe, splashing water channels and the Museum of the Swiss Guard at Naters.
Description
The 4-day hike along the southern slopes of the Bernese Alps is not particularly difficult but on hot days in high summer, the Walliser Sonnenweg (sun trail) really lives up to its name.
The first stage from Crans-Montana to Leukerbad is the most demanding. In return, Leukerbad welcomes weary hikers with warm thermal pools, Jacuzzis and other treats for body and soul. On the second day, the Albinen ladders offer a breezy experience. The route then leads along the sunny slope above the Rhone Valley, through traditional Valais villages before dropping down to Gampel in the valley.
Stages three and four are identical with the Lötschberg-Südrampe high-level trail. A classic hike, largely following the tracks of the Lötschberg Railway. Two days when hiking railway fans are really in their element, amazed by cleverly sited viaducts, tunnels and spectacular sections of track along the mountain slopes: true masterpieces of early-20th-century railway construction.
Scenic highlights: the four Jolital, Bietschtal and Baltschiedertal valleys, running down in straight lines towards the Rhone Valley from the mighty Bietschhorn massif. More attractions: a wealth of Alpine flora, dark Valais buildings, old barns and storage huts.
The panorama of the Valais Alps is ever present and in many parts the Walliser Sonnenweg becomes a hike along water channels (suonen). The cleverly sited water channels carry the precious liquid to the fields and pastures of the Sonnigen Halden: a tranquil hiking experience.
