Via Alpina
Overview
Intro
From Rossinière to the Col de Solomon, via a bridge dating back to 1650. After the descent into the Hongrin Valley, the climb up the Col de Chaude with superb views of Lake Geneva awaits. From there, the route continues uphill to the intermediate station of the Rochers de Naye cog railway.
Description
This deceptive penultimate stage begins with an exposed ascent over what is known as les traverses of Rossinière through the forest to La Tanchin. On arrival, be enchanted by the glorious views of Château-d’Œx and the mountain panorama. The pass reveals the dark blue waters of Lac de Hongrin down below. The trail goes steeply downhill to La Vuichoude d’en Bas, where a farmhouse offers you the chance to fill up your water bottles.
Refreshed and energised, it is time to tackle the ascent up the Rochers de Naye and marvel at the 150 m dam of the Lac de Hongrin reservoir on the opposite side of the valley. While it might seem like a cliché, it is true that this hike does not only become tougher with every step, but also more impressive. At the foot of the Col de Chaude, it is definitely worth indulging in the homemade caramels in the chalet there as a last boost for the final ascent.
The final stretch awaits, with one last climb: the views over Lake Geneva and Montreux, as well as the Mont Blanc and Jungfrau mountain ranges are sure to delight all who hike this way. Hotel Le Coucou at the Haut de Caux middle station is particularly recommended, and can be reached either by hiking an additional two hours or by cog railway. The hotel lies in an exceptional location with glorious views, and also offers local cuisine in a stylish rustic setting.
