Via Albula/Bernina
Overview
Intro
Along the «King's Stage» from northern Italy to the southern portal of the tunnel and over the pass. The mountain hike leads past the crystal-clear Palpuognasee lake, over Weissenstein Alp or Crap Alv up to the Fuorcla Crap Alv (2466 m altitude) and steeply down into Val Bever to the idyllic stage destination of Spinas.
Description
Preda is actually just a little hamlet with fewer than ten inhabitants. Nonetheless, it has a lot to offer: shortly before reaching Preda, the Albula railway line forms a curving structure that spans four viaducts to overcome the altitude difference. The tunnel into the Engadin valley that follows is the centrepiece of the Albula line. The hiking trail descends into the woods and, after about half an hour, you will arrive at the Lai da Palpuogna lake – an oasis of glassy water surrounded by a larch forest. But, as it is used as a reservoir, swimming is not allowed.
Continue through the Crap Alv-Ervedi natural forest reserve until you reach the Albulastrasse road. Once you have crossed the road, you will now be on the exposed part of the route. After 30 minutes, you will reach the beautiful little lake of Lajets digl Crap Alv. This is a good spot to rest for a while. Deep within the mountain, the Rhaetian Railways trains pass through the Albula Tunnel at just under six kilometres in length. Once your break is up, it’s time to tackle the final uphill stretch until you reach the pass at 2,466 metres. With fantastic views over the Val Bever valley, stretching as far as the Piz Ot, Piz Muottas and other peaks, you will then move onto the descent. In the valley floor, you will once again be immersed in beautiful nature. This area calls for a leisurely stroll along the river Beverin until you reach Spinas, your destination for this leg. This is also where Rhaetian Railways makes its first stop in the Engadin right outside the tunnel.
