Hike Lauterbrunnen - Stechelberg
Overview
Intro
A total of 72 waterfalls gush down into the Lauterbrunnen Valley from the vertical cliff faces, some of which are as high as 400m. The roar and rush of these unique natural spectacles accompanies hikers on this picturesque trail from Lauterbrunnen to Stechelberg.
Description
When Goethe visited the Lauterbrunnen Valley in 1779, he was so fascinated by the Staubbach Falls that he penned the poem “Song of the Spirits over the Water”. This brought worldwide fame for the striking waterfall. While the water spray at the edge of the village of Lauterbrunnen marks the start of this hike and the Lauterbrunnen Valley, it is by no means its only highlight. The Trümmelbach Falls around halfway along the hiking route are perhaps even more impressive: inside the mountain, the largest underground waterfalls in Europe thunder down over ten cascades, which can be reached via a labyrinth of steps and galleries. The meltwater of the Jungfrau Glacier gushes down into the valley at an impressive 20,000 litres per second, dragging with it more than 20,000 tonnes of debris and making the entire mountain rumble. The hike continues on past the Mürrenbachfall, the highest waterfall in Switzerland, and along the icy blue Lütschine river to Stechelberg. In this tranquil holiday resort, a cable car goes up the Schilthorn – made world-famous by 007, with the name Piz Gloria originating in the Bond novel On Her Majesty’s Secret Service.
Once at the end of the hike, a postal bus goes back to Lauterbrunnen from Stechelberg.
