Thurweg
Overview
Intro
The Thur has been allowed more room to meander before joining the Rhine, resulting in the emergence of new wetlands. After a shaded riverside path, the route leads alongside the agricultural zone at Flaach to the banks of the Rhine and past the Thurauen nature centre to Rüdlingen.
Description
Andelfingen is spread across several levels of terrain on the steep slope above the river. The area is characterised at the highest point by the church district. Farmhouses in typical regional timber-frame construction are grouped around it. The covered wooden bridge over the Thur bears witness to Andelfingen’s long settlement history as a bridge and customs place serving as a regional centre.
As soon as you start, you cross the covered wooden bridge over the Thur. Andelfingen Castle towers above the bridge and the old mills. The castle has an attractive and well-maintained castle park, which is still one of the most important in Switzerland. The park is open to the public all year round. In winter, cultural events take place in the rooms of the castle.
The hike continues on varied paths that lead along the banks of the Thur through fields and on forest roads. The last crossing of the Thur takes place in the agricultural area of Flaach. On the opposite side of the bank, you walk through a floodplain forest. It is worth stopping for a moment here and listening to the sounds of nature: rustling in the bushes, the loud croaking of frogs, the chirping of the birds, the drumming of the woodpecker and the nibbling of the beaver.
The Thur flows together with the Rhine at the top of the Thur. The path continues along the banks of the Rhine to the Thurauen Nature Centre. You can find out exciting things here about the floodplain landscape, climate, biodiversity and wildlife in the area.
After the last section along the Rhine and crossing the Rüdlingen Rhine bridge, you reach the destination for the stage and thus the end of the Thurweg trail. Nestled in the vineyards, Rüdlingen is an impressive and idyllic place. An exclave of the canton of Schaffhausen, Rüdlingen borders the canton of Zurich and also Germany.
An enjoyable tour includes the careful planning of the same. Please inform yourself in advance at the local information center about the route and weather conditions. Depending on the season and weather conditions, this route may be blocked or interrupted
