Intro

The St.Gallen bridge trail leads through the nature and landscape conservation area "Sitter and Wattbach" and past 18 viaducts, suspension bridges and wooden as well as concrete bridges. Information boards about their history and technical details can be found at all the bridges.

Description

The St.Gallen bridge trail starts in the south-west of the city and leads through the river landscapes of the Sitter and Wattbach nature reserve. The largely natural river environment is a habitat for many protected and endangered animals and plants. There are a total of 18 viaducts, wooden and concrete bridges and suspension footbridges to admire and cross along the bridge trail. At each of the bridges, an information board provides details about the type and year of construction.

The hike starts at the Haggen-Schlössli, formerly a baroque country estate, today a public restaurant owned by the city of St.Gallen. It leads down through the ravine to Zweibruggen. There you will find the 355-metre-long Haggen bridge. The steel truss construction spans the Sitter at a height of 98.6 metres, making it one of the highest bridges in Europe. The trail continues first uphill and then descends to Kubel, where the Urnäsch flows into the Sitter. The river is crossed on a historic wooden bridge with numerous inscriptions. This is why it was given the nickname "the talking bridge". This is also the site of the SOB-Sitter viaduct, at 99 metres the highest railway bridge in Switzerland.

In the Sitter and Wattbach nature reserve, we now follow the river. Through the Wägenwald forest, the trail first follows the paved road up to the old customs house near the Kräzernbrücke bridge, which was used to collect the bridge toll up until the 18th century. Along the way, we pass the SBB Sitter viaduct and two road bridges. Crossing under the railway and car viaducts, we proceed through flat terrain and over a footbridge into a ravine. Across green meadows and the hanging footbridge at Rechen, the trail finally leads to Spisegg. The hike ends at the covered wooden bridge and the new Spisegg bridge.

An enjoyable tour includes the careful planning of the same. Please inform yourself in advance at the local information center about the route and weather conditions. Depending on the season and weather conditions, this route may be blocked or interrupted
