Seerücken-Route
Overview
Intro
Low-stemmed fruit trees stand stalwartly together, the high-stemmed alone. The area is called «Mostindien», (most is the name for apple and pear juice). Here inns are rare, Ice Age the boulders, Alpine views spectacular. The Bodensee beckons from a distance.
Description
The town of Siegershausen appears primarily in medical manuals. It is here that Jacob Nufer from Thurgau is said to have carried out the first caesarean section in around 1500, and the mother survived the operation. A planet trail starts at the railway station, which runs to the planetarium and the Kreuzlingen observatory. And perhaps even more important: the final stage of the Seerücken route to Arbon on Lake Constance begins in Siegershausen. The half-timbered houses in Illighausen and elsewhere along the route are attractive to look at.
On the way, you can enjoy stunning sections of forest, peacefully grazing animals and a quiet, spacious landscape. On panels and themed trails, you learn a great deal about local fruit growing and the animal world. Again and again, you catch a glimpse of Lake Constance, also known as the «Swabian-Swiss sea». In the other direction, much further away, the Säntis shows off its huge face. A trip through Thurgau’s «Mostindien» is not only worth a trip when the fruit trees are in bloom.
The Waldschenke Romanshorn (forest inn) is located in the middle of a cosy deciduous forest. Since there are few of these on the Seerücken route, this is an absolute must (note opening times). You can feel at home with bratwurst or fondue under a leafy canopy at this family-run venue.
Nobody has to go hungry in Hungerbühl either: with all the apple orchards, you can almost miss the pear, cherry and walnut trees. Sedate, gentle cows roam around in the meadows, and shy cats lurk around large farmhouses.
There are superb timber-framed buildings to be seen in the historic town of Arbon. The castle there was built at the beginning of the 16th century on the foundations of the Roman fort. The tower even dates back to the 13th century. Most cyclists in the region are heading for Lake Constance. All the better for us: the Seerücken route therefore remains our secret!
