Stammerjoch-Weg
Overview
Intro
A substantial part of this circuitous route proceeds along an historic footpath - the path along which the first settlers came into Samnaun Valley. Thanks to the diversity of the route one learns much about the different Samnaun regions.
Description
The hike starts in Samnaun village. Behind the Bündnerhof Hotel the trail begins with a gentle climb towards Muttler, the highest mountain in the Samnaun mountain range. This peak dominates Val Maisas, which we'll be traversing next. The slope increases before we reach the shepherd's hut, or Hirtenhütte, the perfect place for our first break. All kinds of animals can be spotted here, not least of all the eagle that has built his eyrie on the steep cliff opposite the hut. After the shepherd's hut the path branches off to the right below Rossboden in the direction of Stammerjoch. The path then winds in serpentine loops towards Joch. Time and again the trail offers splendid views of the surrounding peaks. After Stammerjoch, at 2676 m the highest point of the walk, the trail winds its way slowly down into Val Chamins. Through lush meadows, the route meanders into Val Musauna and finally once more into Samnaun village, which is also the end of our round trip.
