Panorama Rundweg Thunersee
Overview
Intro
The route leads back to Thun over the Spiezberg hill and along the tranquil lakeside path. It's worth making the detour to the church in Einigen, which illustrates 1300 years of cultural history around Lake Thun. To finish, the numerous restaurants in the town wait to welcome weary travellers.
Description
The fourth stage back to Thun starts at the castle in Spiez, positioned on what is said to be the prettiest bay in the whole of Europe. You’re welcome to visit the castle to learn about its history, which stretches back around 1,300 years. You’ll also get fantastic views of Lake Thun and the surrounding mountains from the top of the castle tower.
No sooner has it begun than the hike takes you right into Spiez’s vineyards. Grapes have been grown around Lake Thun for over a millennium. The vines are fairly high up at over 600 metres above sea level, meaning that they are influenced by the Alpine climate as well as the mild weather enjoyed by the lakeside region. It is therefore no surprise that Spiez produces some fresh, elegant and distinctive wines.
Passing through the Spiezberg forest and over the Moosegg hill, the trail continues on to Einigen. Known locally as a «Bäuert» – a kind of cooperative – Einigen is part of the municipality of Spiez alongside Faulensee, Hondrich and Spiezwiler. While you’re here, it’s worth paying a visit to the «Einiger Chileli», regarded as the mother church for the twelve 1,000-year-old churches around Lake Thun. Shortly after leaving Einigen, you cross the Kander, a river that rises near the Kander Neve glacier not far from the Lötschberg Pass. The 47-kilometre-long Kander flows into Lake Thun near Einigen a few metres further below.
Back on the lake shore, the trail crosses the Gwattlischenmoos. This conservation area is designed to protect the last remaining large reed bed on the lower part of the lake, which offers an ideal habitat for a wide variety of flora and fauna. Passing through Bonstetten Park and past the islet of Grunder, the route reaches the picturesque Schadau Castle. The history of the castle and the area around it stretches back as far as 1348. Modelled on an English garden, Schadau Park has been open to the public since 1860. After passing Thun’s harbour, you reach the end of the stage in the town proper shortly afterwards.
