Intro

From wheat country to wine country, the climb continues to the Tête de Ran (1329 m), panorama from Lac Lèman to the Glarner Alps. Then down to the Jura high valley to La Chaux-de-Fonds, with its 19th century geometric layout.

Description

This stage starts in the centre of the village of Corcelles. It runs from Lake Neuchâtel, winding uphill through the Forêt de Peseux into the beautiful Val-de-Ruz. This trough-shaped valley is surrounded by Jura mountain ranges and was formerly known as Rudolfstal. Although agriculture continues here, the number of farms is declining steadily. The cycle path runs through wide wheat fields to Les Hauts-Geneveys.

The climb to the Tête-de-Ran saddle begins here. Tourism and winter sports in particular have developed on the Tête-de-Ran. In Western Swiss patois, “Ran” means something like “slope”. Once at the top, there is a panorama across the Jura, Lake Geneva and the Alps. After the Tête-de-Ran, the trail then runs through wooded sections and fields down to the destination for this stage, La Chaux-de-Fonds.

La Chaux-de-Fonds has no suburbs and is considered to be a country town, closely interwoven with its rural surroundings. It is laid out like a chessboard. The chessboard layout of La Chaux-de-Fonds is a result of idealistic urban planning that emerged during the Age of Enlightenment. It was developed after a fire destroyed the entire village in 1794. Today, La Chaux-de-Fonds is the most important example of uniform urban planning from the 19th century.

At that time, La Chaux-de-Fonds quickly developed into the centre of the flourishing watch industry. The city was also the hometown of Charles-Édouard Jeanneret-Gris, better known as Le Corbusier, who built his first architectural works here. In 2009, La Chaux-de-Fonds, together with the neighbouring town of Le Locle, was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
