Hörnli Bike
Overview
Intro
Pleasant journey through lower Toggenburg with its typical pre-Alpine chains of hills and cultivated countryside. Particularly impressive in autumn when a sea of fog floods the valleys and the Säntis summit is covered with the first snow.
Description
This second stage sets off from Hulftegg, the mountain pass that connects the Tösstal valley with the Toggenburg region. The pre-Alpine pass also forms the watershed of the rivers Töss and Thur. Keeping cycling along the pass road until you reach Mühlrüti. You will then encounter a hilly landscape typical of this area, which you will explore over gently undulating terrain until you arrive at the main municipality of Mosnang. Dietfurt is the next settlement along the way. It boasts an impressive viaduct, with the Dietfurterbach stream joining the river Thur below.
Now comes the ascent: first to Oberhelfenschwil and then onwards to Schwanden, up to the Wasserfluh pass at 848 metres above sea level. This is the highest point of this stage. From the Waldschwilerberg mountain onwards, you can treat your calves to a rest: the descent to Hofstetten covers around 300 metres of altitude.
Then it’s time for more pedalling, with the last few metres uphill to Hemberg. This high-altitude health resort is known for its salubrious air and sits atop a ridge between the Toggenburg region and the Neckertal valley. The views over the Alpstein massif and into Appenzellerland are at once imposing and delightful.
