Intro

A challenging bike route to the highest place of pilgrimage in Europe. With an energy-sapping climb and a descent demanding a high level of skill, this challenging route delivers a high level of variety.

Description

You set off from the car park at the Savognin mountain railway base station. A relaxing warm-up trail leads past a swimming lake along the Julia River to the next bridge. From there the route climbs gently up to the village of Riom, a recipient of the Swiss Heritage Society’s Wakker Prize. It continues to go uphill on forest roads until shortly before Parsonz where it changes to a leisurely trail heading to Salouf. The somewhat steeper ascent to Ziteil begins at the Salouf village entrance. The road is out of the sun and continues through the forest. Once the edge of the forest is reached two lovely Alpine huts - Munter and Ratitisch - come into view on either side of the road.

Then you continue to descend across meadows to Ziteil. This second part requires strength and stamina. Once you get to the top, your efforts are rewarded with a breathtaking view across the Surses valley. A visit to the pilgrimage church in Ziteil at an altitude of 2433 metres is well worth it. Please note that church opening times are limited, but it is usually open on the weekend. Note: call ahead for overnight accommodations (at least 2 weeks in advance).

You descend initially along a technically demanding single track incorporating a 400-metre drop in altitude above the alpine tree line. In Cre digl Lai the trail heads in the direction of Bargung and through the light forest to Lungatigia. Another attractive trail begins here and leads through Val da Morts (Valley of the Dead) to Parsonz, where it joins the uphill trail again. Glimpses of the impressive Rätia Ampla castle in Riom can be caught while riding across the fields. The castle towering over the valley is home to the Origen cultural festival. Along the Julia River and past Lai Barnagn (good for swimming) the trail continues to the bottom station in Savognin. Tip: those who prefer to take it easy should grab an e-bike to ride to Ziteil and return the same way.

An enjoyable tour includes the careful planning of the same. Please inform yourself in advance at the local information center about the route and weather conditions. Depending on the season and weather conditions, this route may be blocked or interrupted
