Intro
Gubel is a hill in the municipality of Menzingen in Canton Zug (913 m.a.s.l.) where the Capuchin convent of Maria Hilf was founded in 1851.
Since the 16th century, hermits here have been maintaining this battle and pilgrimage chapel, which was built in 1566 to commemorate the victory of the Catholic areas over those of the Reformed side in the Old Swiss Confederacy at the Battle of Gubel on 24 October 1531. The interior ceiling bears a depiction of the battle, which was renewed after the chapel burnt down in 1780. The present construction in Rococo style was last renewed in 1864. Another attraction on the Gubel is the former Bloodhound military position. It has been preserved as a guided missile museum and may be visited on one of the regular guided tours.
