Navigate the locks to reach Eglisau
Overview
Intro
Almost as soon as your trip begins at the Rhine Falls, you will experience the Rhine Falls from up close before gliding down the Rhine into the “Rhineland Amazon”. After around 30 minutes, your party will reach the Rheinau power station, where your boat will have to pass the first weir. This requires you to leave the boat and walk 100 metres along the track while the ship is pulled to the other side on a trolley – a truly unique spectacle!
The journey takes you past the monastery island of Rheinau and on to the second weir, where your boat is once again transferred by trolley. The trip continues along Rheinau and under the over 200-year-old wooden bridge that connects Jestetten/Altenburg with Rheinau, finally reaching the third and last weir, known locally as the “Stollenauslauf”.
This is where the Rhine commences its natural flow. On request and with advance reservation, you will be served a “Rhine Falls or Fisherman’s Feast Platter” to enjoy during the trip. While passing by Ellikon, you’ll see numerous beaver tracks (and you might even be lucky enough to spot a real live beaver), the mouth of the River Thur, Rüdlingen including views of the Buchberg church, Tössegg (the mouth of the River Töss) and finally Eglisau.
From here, you can either walk to the train station 30 minutes away and take the train back or you can board the boat again after a 45-minute break and travel back to the Rhine Falls.
Making for a day that is both eventful and relaxing at the same time.
