Musée d'histoire du Valais / Geschichtsmuseum Wallis
Overview
Intro
A cultural history of the Valais.
On the prestigious site of Valère Castle, in the former houses of the canons of the Cathedral Chapter, twenty-seven rooms offer a transdisciplinary look at the cultural history of the Valais. More than a thousand objects, models, drawings and visual animations provide an insight into some 50,000 years of history, from the hunter-gatherers of the Palaeolithic to the industrial upheavals of the 20th century, from the medieval pomp of the Prince-Bishop to the rich history of the foreign service. Thanks to a transversal and synthetic reading of history, based on certain major themes that run through the chronological journey, you'll come away from Valère with the keys that will enable you to understand what has shaped the Valais of today, in its cultural context of course, but also in its natural environment and in the European geopolitical context.
Tourbillon Castle
Leaving the Valère site, don't hesitate to climb the nearby hill of Tourbillon. Here you'll discover the ruins of the bishop's castle, built around 1300 and unfortunately burnt down in 1788. The small chapel, relatively untouched by the flames, has preserved much of its early 14th-century mural painting cycle, a rare find in the Alps.
