As tourists savor a fondue outside on the square, the surreal works of H.R. Giger come alive inside the Château St. Germain castle - where his famous film decor, pictures, sculptures and furniture are set out in the form of exhibition. And if you’d like even more Giger-ambiance, take a seat in the bar opposite, where you can sip Martinis in a vault of bone.
When the Swiss artist was awarded an Oscar for his “Alien“ monster in a film of the same name in 1980 - he suddenly became world-famous overnight. But instead of purchasing a villa in Hollywood, he opted for the beautiful Château St. Germain at the heart of the picturesque little town of Gruyères in Fribourg. And since 1998 the noble abode is a museum in which visitors are amazed at the large collection of works by the artist.
Equally as fantastic, or should we say morbid, as the rooms of the museum are the furnishing of the affiliate HR Giger Bar - with scurrilous film decor, pictures, sculptures and furniture. Here you find yourself seated in a vault of imitation bones as you gaze at shelves full of dead sculls while taking a sip of your drink: A weird and wonderful experience in keeping the memory of the late artist alive. HR Giger died in 2014.
