Majd Abdel Hamid, Sofía Salazar Rosales
Overview
Intro
This double exhibition brings together the artistic approaches of two artists, each poetically exploring themes of identity, time, fragility, and materiality.
With this double exhibition, Kunst Halle Sankt Gallen would like to bring the artistic approaches of Majd Abdel Hamid (*1988 in Damascus/SY, lives in Paris/FR and Beirut/LB) and Sofía Salazar Rosales (*1999 in Quito/EC, lives in Amsterdam/NL) to Eastern Switzerland. Both artists are united by the poetic way in which they focus on themes of identity, time, fragility and materiality in their works. By means of new creations, they respond to the context of St.Gallen.
Majd Abdel Hamid uses textiles and embroidery techniques to create worlds of small-format objects that are characterised by reduction, precision and philosophical depth. He deliberately works slowly: with impressive patience, he creates detailed embroideries and cross-stitch works that embody decelerated, profound reflection and resistance to a fast-paced world. Against the textile industry background of the region, the artist wants to explore, in his words, a ‘de-automisation of fabrics’. His meditative miniatures reflect the fragile roots in politically charged environments.
Sofía Salazar Rosales will be presenting her work of material poetics for the first time in a Swiss institution. While Salazar Rosales engages with an untameable variety of materials - glass beads, paraffin, epoxy, bronze powder, polyester resin, fibreglass, vinyl glue, plant seeds, construction paper, copper, concrete, colour pigments, oak wood, iron filings, plaster, cotton wool, gauze or glass aggregate, to name but a few - she resolutely emphasises the handcrafted as a resistant aesthetic. The nature of her sculptures and installations is thus charged with political and sociological content and questions notions of productivity and value.
