Ad Parnassum
The “Ad Parnassum” picture is the result of an elaborate working process: Paul Klee painted numerous smaller lighter dots over the first layer of coloured squares and added the orange circle and lines to the picture at the end. The circle is reminiscent of the sun, the shape bottom left a gate, while the large tip may be interpreted as the roof of a house, a mountain or pyramid. He paints abstractly by memory, Klee once said. As a result it was a trip to Egypt as well as the shape of the Niesen, a mountain by Lake Thun, that inspired him here.
