Buiräbähnli Safari – Combine a hike with rides in farmers’ cable cars
Overview
Intro
The cable cars once used by mountain farmers are known in Swiss dialect as Buiräbähnli. They are now are the highlight of a multi-day hike through the mountains of the Engelberg region – the Buiräbähnli Safari.
The Buiräbähnli Safari allows guests to explore the Engelberg mountains on foot and breathe in the fresh mountain air. Rides in the cable cars once used by local farmers to transport materials are the high point of this circular hike. Using them is an experience in itself, as the cable cars only operate on request: pick up the receiver, turn the handle, speak into the station phone – and off you go.
The challenging multi-day hike involves 12.5 hours of hiking. Accommodation is in rustic mountain huts by the side of the trails. There are a number of places to eat and drink along the way. Of course, individual day hikes are also an option.
How to get there: Train to Engelberg, the starting point for the multi-day hike.
