Schüssinsel Park in Biel
Overview
Intro
In the centre of Biel, the watchmaking capital of Switzerland, the newly redesigned Schüssinsel Park (Île de la Suze) offers a perfect place to relax. Over 600 trees and various water landscapes create a green oasis.
Located in the heart of Biel and easily accessible on foot or by bike, the Schüssinsel Park (Île de la Suze) is the perfect place to relax. A little slice of paradise in the middle of Switzerland’s largest bilingual city. The newly redesigned park can be easily reached via one of the six bridges that cross the River Schüss or the Stebler canal. The island is substantial, covering an area equivalent to eight football pitches. Grassy meadow areas, native trees and shrubs, a variety of water landscapes, a beach, a large children’s playground and much more can be found on the Île de la Suze and create a green oasis in the heart of the watchmaking city of Biel. An architectural highlight on the edge of the park is the new headquarters of the Swatch watch brand, designed by Japanese star architect Shigeru Ban.
Just a few minutes’ walk from the Île de la Suze, between the Omega production facility and the Swatch headquarters, is the latest highlight for all watch lovers – the Cité du Temps. In this recently opened museum, Biel’s two local – but world famous – watch brands are represented: Swatch and Omega. Not only is the content within exciting and interesting, but the architecture of the building itself is impressive and intriguing too. The Cité du Temps is another creation from internationally renowned Japanese architect Shigeru Ban, which successfully unites the styles of both watch brands under one roof: the playful, cheerful character of Swatch and the luxurious elegance of Omega. Visitors can explore the two different worlds of both brands represented in two museums – Omega Museum and Planet Swatch – which are equipped with innovative interactive technology.
Arrival: From Biel train station take bus no. 2, 3, 4 to "Biel/Bienne, Omega" or "Biel/Bienne, Schüssinsel".
