Overview
Intro
Caesar founded Nyon, intellectuals gathered in the salon of Madame de Staël in Coppet and the rich and famous still love Lac Léman. As a pilgrim, you can reflect on all this or simply enjoy the inspiring landscape.
Description
Rolle is a pretty little town with a picturesque townscape, a medieval castle and a fruity white wine from the region. Much of this is owed to the Chasselas grape, one of Switzerland's leading grape varieties. The local Le Rosey boarding school has been preparing the offspring of monarchs and millionaires for their future since 1880.
Right at the beginning, you walk along the lake promenade and discover the artificial island «Ile de la Harpe», which rises near the shore. It has protected the harbour since the beginning of the 19th century. Shortly after, the path leads away from the shore and only briefly returns to the water once more. We reach Bursinel over fields and farmland. Here, colourfully flowering front yards adorn large houses. A short stretch through the forest provides shade before you find yourself in the exposed vineyards. The former farming village of Gland follows, surrounded by vineyards.
Passing the industrial park, tank barriers that look like Toblerone pieces and a golf course, you reach the Swiss National Museum in Prangins. Perched high above Lake Geneva, Prangins Castle is a popular destination with its vast vegetable garden and French-style park. The small town of Nyon, founded by Caesar, follows a few minutes later.
The route continues to Celigny and past Château Bossey with its charming rose-adorned gatehouse, bay windows and tower. After seven hours, you reach the end point of this long stage in Coppet. During the French Empire, Germaine de Staël hosted famous guests in the castle of Coppet, making the town renowned across Europe.
