Overview
Intro
The boundary between cantons Fribourg and Vaud is crossed over a ridge with sweeping views as far as Curtilles on both sides. A riverside path follows the Broye. The parish church in Moudon with its valuable choir stalls is well worth a visit.
Description
Saint James was one of the twelve apostles of Jesus Christ. Legend has it that his mortal remains were put on a boat that washed ashore in Galicia, where he was buried and a church was built, in which his relics were laid to rest. Nowadays, around 300,000 pilgrims pay homage there every year.
This rather short leg of the Way of St. James starts in Romont, whose hilltop castle is worth seeing. This fortification contains the Vitromusée, which is home to a huge collection of stained glass and church windows. Aside from the Vitromusée, stained glass is key feature in many other parts of this medieval town. This includes the abbey church, other churches and along the streets, with stained glass also used in the construction of many new buildings.
With the hilltop city behind you, you will walk along the surfaced road towards Hennes. The view back over Romont along the way is beautiful, sweeping far and wide across green fields. After crossing the border with the canton of Vaud, there is a gentle climb to Curtilles. At this point, the route branches off and, after a good two and half hours of walking, you will reach the river Broye. Covering 70 kilometres, this is one of the longest rivers in French-speaking Switzerland. On the way from the Fribourg Pre-Alps to Lake Neuchâtel, it flows through the four cantons of Fribourg, Neuchâtel, Vaud and Bern.
Follow this secluded path along the river until you reach this leg’s final destination in Moudon. This village had its heyday under the Count of Savoy in the 14th century. The buildings also date back to this time, lending the village its medieval charm. The upper town with its pretty little alleyways has even been declared a heritage site of national importance. Down in the lower town, the triple-nave Reformed Church of Saint-Étienne is worth a visit. It is one of French-speaking Switzerland’s finest examples of High Gothic architecture and the canton’s largest parish church.
