Overview
Intro
Between Wattwil and Rapperswil, the landscape is dotted with individual farms and marked by gently rolling hills and various-sized woodland areas. Some beautiful sunken paths turn the hike into a special experience.
Description
The route starts at the railway station of Wattwil, Toggenburg's main town, and leads to Iberg Castle. The fortress, built in 1240, was intended to secure the Ricken and Laad passes and thus protect the rights of the Abbot of St. Gallen. At the same time, it allowed for the monitoring of any military operations carried out by the Count of Toggenburg.
Your hike continues mainly on asphalted roads uphill to Laad. Then comes an easy descent to Walde and St. Gallenkappel, which is reached after about four hours. The municipality merged with Eschenbach and Goldingen in 2013, where you arrive about an hour later.
The last section leads through the Jonerwald forest and the suburbs of Rapperswil. You reach the lake promenade through the beautiful old town and past the imposing Rapperswil Castle – the end of a long, seven-and-a-half-hour hike.
Rapperswil, where around 20,000 roses bloom every year, stands out for its panoramic views from the Glarus Alps to the Zurich Oberland, the castle built between 1220 and 1230, and the picturesque old town. The Swiss National Circus Knie operates its children's zoo here, and the Stampf lido offers plenty of space for leisure activities, from beach volleyball to camping.
An enjoyable tour includes the careful planning of the same. Please inform yourself in advance at the local information center about the route and weather conditions. Depending on the season and weather conditions, this route may be blocked or interrupted
