Full steam ahead over the Furka Pass
Overview
The journey by historic steam train along the Furka Steam Railway is unrivalled worldwide. The experience begins in Oberwald, 1,368 metres above sea level. Just as they would have done more than 100 years ago, the passengers embark on the cog train that leads through the wild mountain landscape of Goms via the Furka Pass. The 18-kilometre-long stretch takes the passengers through a largely untouched part of the Swiss Alps. The railway winds its way through wild gorges and along steep hillsides before climbing to more than 2,000 metres above sea level, making this Europe’s highest steam railway. The destination once on the other side is Realp railway station in the canton of Uri. Along the cog railway route, some of the railway traction vehicles and carriages that are in use that are over 100 years old. The historic steam railway is kept in good condition by an association made up of volunteers. The trips are possible throughout summer and autumn.
