Grande Dixence Dam
Overview
Intro
The Grande Dixence, the world's highest gravity dam, collects melting water from 35 Valaisian glaciers in the region surrounding Zermatt and leading up to Val d’Hérens. The dam is a visitor attraction and also the starting point for mountain hikes.
The Grande Dixence site is open from the beginning of June to the end of October. Guided tours of the inside of the dam are organised every day. The 700-metre-long AlpinLine zip line runs along the dam wall, skimming over this concrete colossus for guaranteed thrills. The cable car takes you to the top of the dam in just five minutes. Grande Dixence is also the starting point for numerous hikes, including the Sentier des Bouquetins, a 4-hour loop which passes by the Prafleuri hut. The Barrage's hotel-restaurant "Le Ritz" offers a warm welcome for a meal or an overnight stay.
