Schin Gorge
Overview
Intro
Crossing the Schin Gorge between Tiefencastel, Alvaschein and Sils in Domleschg was not for nervous travellers.
A perilous detour along the rugged flank of the Schin Gorge was the only passage until the modern road was built. We can reasonably assume that the wayside shrine at Pleuna received countless hasty prayers of intercession and thanksgiving.
The Alte Schinweg lost much of its importance and mythos after the first road through the difficult geological gorge was built in 1868/69. This was followed in 1920 by the construction of a tunnel through the infamous Moir rock face. Hiking the Alte Schinweg with its vertiginous drops and magnificent views today nevertheless remains an unforgettable experience. This route is also particularly suited to mountain biking.
The long hike takes five to six hours and goes from Sils in Domleschg to Tiefencastel.
Getting there: Take the Rhaetian Railway to Thusis and from there take the PostBus to Sils in Domleschg.
