ViaRhenana
Overview
Intro
The ViaRhenana, one of Switzerland's longest hiking trails, runs for ten days along the historic waterway between Untersee and Hochrhein. The fourth stage takes four hours from Schaffhausen to Rheinau with its baroque monastery church.
Description
An average of 700,000 litres of water per second plunge across a width of 150 metres and 23 metres into the depths. This is a record - there is no other waterfall in Europe bigger than the Rheinfall. This is experienced in a most impressive way on a boat trip through the Rheinfall basin, of which the highlight is the climb up the famous rock in the midst of the thundering mass of water.
The ViaRhenana's fourth stage starts in Schaffhausen and leads for 14 comfortable kilometres along to Rheinau in barely 4 hours. Make sure you stay long enough to go sightseeing in the medieval historic city centre with its 171 oriel windows. They are amongst the most beautiful to be found in the country. The historic city centre is dominated by the Munot Fortress, a landmark towering above the city.
Then along the vineyard of Flurlingen to the filigree Rhine bridge from 1857 and on the banks of Neuhausen to Rheinfall. The Rheinufer Trail to Rheinau starts below Castle Wörth. Definitely worth a visit here is the monastery island with its impressive buildings and beautiful setting.
An enjoyable tour includes the careful planning of the same. Please inform yourself in advance at the local information center about the route and weather conditions. Depending on the season and weather conditions, this route may be blocked or interrupted
