Intro

Description
The gateway to the Bernese Oberland, Thun is a town packed with highlights: the mighty castle, the historic old town, lakeside bathing spots and promenades, and a majestic Alpine backdrop. It’s well worth planning in some time here before you start so you don’t miss out. The hike begins at the railway station. You cross the Aare River on the lower Schleusenbrücke bridge, from where you can still catch a glimpse of the imposing 12th-century castle. Follow the promenade alongside the Aare until you reach the lake. On your right, you’ll spot the picturesque Schadau Castle with its magnificent parkland.
After that, you leave the shore behind as you climb gently up to the forest near Hünibach and then on to Oberhofen. However, you’ll still be able to enjoy fantastic views of Lake Thun and the mountains behind it. The first thing you’ll spot as you approach Oberhofen is the castle situated right on the lake. Another 12th-century construction, it boasts stylish rooms that are open to the public as well as some of the prettiest gardens in the Alps. The landscape changes when you arrive at Balmflueg in around two hours’ time. Following a precipitous descent down into the gorge, you climb back up again with the help of some steep steps.
From Erizbühl, you leave the forest and follow a tarmac road as far as Sigriswil and its bridge with panoramic views. The 340-metre-long bridge spans the Guntenbach gorge and connects the two villages of Sigriswil and Aeschlen. Anyone with a good head for heights can enjoy impressive views down and across the gorge – in exchange for a fee, unfortunately. The hiking trail winds down to the gorge, immersing you in the wild natural landscape that the Guntenbach River has carved out over millennia. Following a gruelling climb back up the other side, the stage comes to an end in Sigriswil.
