Bisses de Lentine et de Mont d’Orge
Overview
Intro
Two channels are at the heart of this walk: you’ll follow the one from Lentine until it joins Lac du Mont d’Orge with its nature reserve. The Mont d’Orge channel leads you to well-known wineries, such as «Domaine du Mont d’Or». On the way down to the valley you’ll enjoy a view of Sion from the terraced vineyards.
Description
The walk begins at the hamlet of Drône, which is part of the community of Savièse along the Bisse de Lentine. A part of it flows in concrete conduits. The vineyards (home of Fendant, Johannisberg, Dôle and other Valais wines), orchards, Mediterranean forests, «Guérites» (huts used for work in the vineyards) and views of the Valais Alps and the Rhone Valley accompany hikers on the way to Lac Mont d’Orge, which is dominated by the ruins of a medieval castle and surrounded by unspoilt nature (included in the inventory of natural heritage sites).
The path then winds through the Domaine du Mont d’Or, a 24-hectare estate spread over 220 terraces. The Bisse du Mont d’Orge, built in 1885, carries water from Lac du Mont d’Orge and supplies the southern face of the hill, including the renowned Mont d’Or estate. A short descent through a terraced vineyard takes hikers to the Bisse with views over the city of Sion and its famous medieval castles (Tourbillon and Valère) sitting atop two hills.
The walk ends on the plain in Pont-de-la-Morge. The eponymous river originates in the Sanetsch area, where a mountain pass separates the cantons of Valais and Berne at an elevation of 2,252 metres.
An enjoyable tour includes the careful planning of the same. Please inform yourself in advance at the local information center about the route and weather conditions. Depending on the season and weather conditions, this route may be blocked or interrupted
