Intro
This physically challenging snow shoe tour on the sunny side of Val Medel leads through unspoilt winter landscapes up and beyond the tree line. Tegia Nova offers spectacular views of the peaks of Val Medel and the upper Surselva region.
Description
The snow shoe trekking starts in the settlement of Platta, the former centre of Val Medel. The Baroque St. Martin’s parish church is well worth seeing. The Romanesque design of the church steeple and the large painting of Saint Christopher on the south facade are impressive. A bridge then leads across the Rein da Medel (Medelser Rhine) river, the largest headwater stream of the Rhine. The actual trail starts shortly before Drual.
With the snow shoes strapped on, the trail leads steadily uphill from here – first in gentle, wide bends on the snowy forest road, then slightly steeper uphill through the forest. At the mountain hut settlement of Mises dalla Casa, the trail veers off the forest road. Keep left, the trail now gets steeper. It leads across open terrain and through a forested section up to the tour’s highest point at Tegia Nova. Here, the slope is only moderately steep. Enjoy the commanding views of the surrounding peaks and across the upper Surselva region. To the south, you can see the Medelser mountain range, from Piz Medel to Piz Cristallina. To the east, the imposing peaks of Piz Muraun, Piz Cazirauns and Piz Caschleglia soar high above Curaglia. In good weather, even the Tödi is visible.
After Tegia Nova, the trail runs past snowy pine trees and finally through a fairytale forest. It continues downhill towards the Stagias hill and to the mountain huts at Plauns. Here, the route leads across an open field, first steeply downhill, before flattening out after a couple of bends down to Pali. Once a fraction of Val Medel that was inhabited year-round, Pali today consists of only a few stables and the Sogn Giusep chapel. From here, the end of the tour is already within eyeshot. Curaglia is the largest village in the valley and the administrative centre of the municipality of Medel.
