Hunger Fortresses
Overview
Intro
A visit to the Fortini della Fame is an invitation to take an emotional leap into the past and immerse oneself in a difficult and turbulent historical period of Ticino.
A beautiful nature trail leads to the hunger fortresses in Camorino and is ideal for those who wish to spend a few hours in silence.
The hunger fortresses are cylindrical towers built in 1853, serving a dual purpose: on one hand, they were part of the defense system against the Austrians, and on the other hand, they served as workplaces for refugees under the command of Marshal Radetzky from Lombardy. The construction of the fortresses provided employment for around 500 people for over two years, becoming an important source of employment and income in the region. Today, these characteristic buildings are considered an ideal destination to admire the Magadino Plain from above.
A themed trail of about two hours follows a section of the Dufour defensive line in the Camorino district. Along the route – partly on roads, partly on paths – visitors can admire the five fortresses (Ai Scarsitt, Ai Munt, Ala Pélera, Al Sass del Camósc, and Al Pian di Bur), some in their original condition and others restored.
The trail is equipped with signs and explanatory panels, winding along the beautiful Camorino hill, through vineyards and forests. Visitors can enjoy an exceptional panoramic view of the entire area of Bellinzona, Pizzo di Claro, and the entire Magadino Plain to Lake Maggiore.
