This is the Bürgenstock
The Bürgenstock or Bürgenberg is located in the heart of Switzerland on
Lake Lucerne in the Canton of Nidwalden. The 1128-metre-high mountain of the Uri Alps is known for its wonderful views, the
Hammetschwand Lift and the luxurious
Bürgenstock resort.
Discover the Bürgenstock
Travel by catamaran across the lake and take the oldest electric funicular up the mountain: the
journey to the Bürgenstock from
Lucerne is an experience in itself. And then there is the fantastic view: Your gaze wanders across Lake Lucerne to Lucerne, the
Rigi, the
Pilatus and over the Brünig Pass to the Bernese Alps.
Cliff walk
The legendary
cliff walk, built more than a hundred years ago, is a masterpiece of engineering. Following a wide gravel path you can walk along the rock face, sometimes passing through cave-like tunnels. Beyond the edge is a 500-metre vertical drop. The cliff walk takes you to the Hammetschwand lift or on to the wonderful Känzeli viewpoint. Passing the
Villa Honegg, you can return to where you started or proceed downhill towards Lake Lucerne.
Hammetschwand Lift
Climb 152 meters into the air in just 48 seconds: the Hammetschwand Lift promises one of the most spectacular panoramic rides and is only for people with a head for heights. The highest and fastest open-air lift in Europe opened in 1905. The elevator shaft and engine room are built into the mountain on a rocky outcrop. The lift tower is illuminated on summer nights, when it is clearly visible from Lucerne.
In and around the Bürgenstock
From the Bürgenstock you can reach some of the most famous destinations in Switzerland: Lucerne, the Rigi, the Pilatus and the
Stanserhorn. Explore the fjord landscape of Lake Lucerne on a nostalgic
paddle steamer. Alternatively, visit
Brunnen on the “
Swiss Path” and enjoy the panoramic views on its beautiful waterfront.
Experience the Bürgenstock for less
Take the train and bus from Lucerne via Stansstad as an inexpensive way to reach the Bürgenstock. The Bürgenstock Resort offers
package deals such as round-trip travel by catamaran, funicular and Hammetschwand Lift. Cut costs by taking a picnic, for example on a round trip over the Hammetschwand to the Känzeli and back.
