This is Brienz
Brienz is situated in the west of Switzerland in the Bernese Oberland, at the eastern end of Lake Brienz. The village is a real draw for visitors thanks to its location by the lake as well as its beautiful Brunngasse.
Discover Brienz
Start your day with an exploration tour along the lakeside promenade and through the village. Brunngasse, with its cobblestones and its wooden chalets decorated with flowers and carvings, is a must-see. So it’s no wonder Brienz is listed in the “Inventory of Swiss Heritage Sites”. You can also marvel at the art of wood carving on the
Schnitzlerweg woodcarving trail on the
Axalp above Brienz. Perhaps with a detour to the enchanting
Hinterburgseeli lake along the way.
Lake Brienz
Where does this emerald green come from? That’s what many people ask themselves when they first see Lake Brienz. In fact, these are optical effects created by glacier particles, which is why even in summer only the bravest dare to swim in the lake. Instead, you can cruise across the lake in a
jetboat or soak up the unique atmosphere on a
kayaking tour. A cruise is a wonderful way to relax: in addition to the breakfast cruise and sunset cruises, the
“Lötschberg” paddle steamer is the jewel of
Lake Brienz.
Giessbach Falls
The top excursion destination on Lake Brienz is the
Giessbach Falls: you travel by boat from Brienz to Giessbach station, and from there you’ll take the nostalgic
funicular up to the
Grandhotel Giessbach. On the terrace, you can enjoy the view over the lake and the mountains, with the roar of the Giessbach Falls in the background. A varied hiking trail will take you up close to the waterfall and even at one point behind it.
Around Brienz
Between June and October, experience a ride on the historic
steam-powered cog railway to the
Brienzer Rothorn. From there, you will be able to see an unbelievable 693 mountain peaks. Other top excursion destinations include the
Ballenberg open-air museum,
Lake Lunger, the
Aare Gorge and the neighbouring
Lake Thun.
