Zürichsee-Rundweg
Overview
Intro
This commences with an easy hike along the Sihl River, passing a number of picnic spots, with fireplace, and ideal places to take a cooling swim. At your destination point in Adliswil, a cable car then brings you to the popular Felsenegg viewpoint.
Description
Bürkliplatz, where this hike begins, is popular for its festivals and weekly markets. On the shore on Bürkliterrasse, you won’t be able to miss the sculpture of Ganymede, the youth abducted and taken to Mount Olympus by Zeus in Greek mythology. However, this sculpture shows him begging the eagle (Zeus) to be brought there. With his work, the sculptor Herrmann Hubacher (1885–1976) wanted to create a «Swiss Ganymede».
The views from here stretch over Lake Zurich. In good weather, you can even see as far as the snow-capped mountains, taking in many boats and waterfowl along the way. On the lake side, swans and ducks will accompany you along the path, which is wide and often busy at the start. As you head towards Mythenquai, you should be able to spot on the city side the Baur-au-Lac luxury hotel, the Kongresshaus and the two imposing residential and commercial buildings known as the Rotes Schloss and Weisses Schloss (literally «Red Palace» and «White Palace»).
When it reaches a point level with the Aquaretum fountain with its twelve curved jets of water, the paved path continues directly alongside the lake, past moorings, the city’s collection of succulent plants and the lakeside bathing area. Continuing along Landiwiese gets you to Saffa Island, a charming public bathing spot. A host of art and cultural businesses as well as restaurants serving alternative cuisine have set up shop between the lake and the Rote Fabrik music venue and cultural centre. Taking the Cassiopeia footbridge in front of the shore means you never lose sight of the lake.
After the next bathing area and the harbour at Wollishofen, the path bends 90° to the right and passes through the district of the same name. Detached houses and blocks of flats line the streets right up to the edge of the forest. On the Entlisberg, a biotope reserve and rest area invite you to stop for a while.
A well-maintained forest path then zigzags you down level with the SZU train station at Leimbach and then on to the Sihl. A gravel road alongside the river leads you past Adliswil sports centre. After passing through a built-up area, this stage ends at the town’s railway station.
An enjoyable tour includes the careful planning of the same. Please inform yourself in advance at the local information center about the route and weather conditions. Depending on the season and weather conditions, this route may be blocked or interrupted
