Fountain bathing in the city
Overview
Intro
A cool dip, right in the middle of Basel's old town!
There's nothing nicer on a hot summer's day in Basel than to let yourself be carried along by the Rhine's gentle current. Or is there? Perhaps something a little more easy-going, anyway: in the summer months, the city's fountains are a standing invitation to bathe in cool, refreshing waters.
If you’d like to do as the people of Basel do and experience this tradition for yourself, all you have to do is decide which of the city’s historic bathing fountains most appeals to you.
One of the finest fountains in Basel in which bathing is allowed is the eight-cornered Gemsberg-Brunnen. There you can quietly cool yourself down in the idyllic surroundings of the old town. It takes just a little more courage to try the fountain up on the Spalenberg, which has the city's coldest water, due to its shady location. The most popular bathing fountain is in the St. Alban-Vorstadt district. It's large and deep, so that you can even swim a couple of strokes in it.
