Piazza Grande
Overview
Intro
Piazza Grande in Locarno is one of the largest town squares in Switzerland and the social heart of the city. It covers around 17,000 square meters and is known for its striking cobblestones and historic arcaded houses. The famous Locarno Film Festival and numerous other events take place here.
The Piazza Grande in Locarno was laid out in the 19th century and, with a length of around 190 meters and a width of 60 meters, is one of the most spacious squares in Switzerland. Surrounded by historic palazzi with archways, it offers a mixture of Italian flair and Ticino lifestyle. The cobblestones are particularly striking and give the square its special charm. During the day, weekly markets, cafés and boutiques enliven the area, while in the evening it becomes a popular meeting place.
Piazza Grande is known far beyond the city limits for its major events. Every year, the square is transformed into a spectacular open-air arena for the Locarno Film Festival, where films are shown on a giant screen in the open air. At the Moon&Stars music festival, national and international artists perform on a large stage directly on the square.
In addition to these events, the piazza also serves as a starting point for city tours, as sights such as the Via della Motta with its old town houses or the Castello Visconteo can be easily reached on foot from here.
