Intro

At school, Mauro preferred to sit by the window. He dreamt of the mountains, of snow – indeed of the big, wide world. His thirst for adventure led him to circumnavigate the globe, resulting in a surprising realisation…

On injuries to the neck and ribs, knee and ankle!

Always higher, always further, always faster: even as a boy, Mauro lived for the rush of adrenaline. He was a fast learner with an insatiable curiosity – but preferred to be out on the pistes rather than in the classroom.

why head off to distant climes?

Mauro’s taste for adventure and his time as a professional skier competing in races took him to Spain, France, Argentina and Japan; at some point he had the striking realisation that he didn’t have to travel far to have an adventure. Because the most beautiful mountains are right on his doorstep. Nowadays, Mauro doesn’t just see his home through different eyes; he also experiences the nature it offers in a more conscious and sustainable manner.

I said to myself: I was skiing in Japan yet I didn’t know all the mountains on my own doorstep.

Final stop: home.

Today, Mauro lives with his family and daughter in Airolo, Ticino. He is a mountaineer, primary school teacher and ski instructor. As an athlete, he is an ambassador for the non-profit organisation “Protect our Winters”, which is committed to conscientious mountain sports in harmony with nature.

I have no dreams. Everything is so beautiful. What I really need is: tolerance, acceptance, a certain degree of peace, the mountains and my daughter.

How we protect what we love.

In his personal life, Mauro tries to live his life as sustainably as possible and is committed to conscientious mountain sports. Of course, not everyone is lucky enough to step out of their front door onto a snow-covered picture-perfect landscape. How can everyone else do their bit towards making mountain sports more sustainable?

“You can reach almost every corner of Switzerland by public transport these days”, advises Mauro. In addition, an increasing number of huts are offering regional and vegetarian options.

Some ski regions have already banished single-use plastics, focusing on reusable drinking bottles instead. And of course you can always provide financial support to the organisations that are committed to the sustainable development of mountain sports.

I know that the world is changing and that I can do something. We only have this world, we can’t go anywhere else.
