ViaSbrinz
Overview
Intro
In the late Middle Ages, the «Sbrinz» hard cheese became a top Inner Switzerland export at the markets of Northern Italy. Not least because the mule track over the Grimsel and Gries Passes became a well- developed trade route.
Description
The ViaSbrinz leads over the Jochpass from Inner Switzerland to Haslital and on over the Grimsel and Gries Alpine passes towards the south.
Historically, ViaSbrinz lived mainly from centuries-long trade travel between Inner Switzerland and/or eastern Bernese Oberland and northern Italy. In exchange for wine maize, rice, oil and spices, mainly hard cheese and cattle for slaughter found their way to the market at Domodossola. In the process, «Sbrinz» cheese in particular became a top export.
The ViaSbrinz also lived from its great diversity of natural and cultural resources. Those who follow in the footsteps of the traders, experience the change from the green shores of the Vierwaldstättersee, over the high Alps formed by weather and glaciers, to the southern valleys with their chestnut groves and palm trees. And settled there, people who had to support themselves under various conditions, who developed manual skills and local customs, traded and built villages and roads.
An enjoyable tour includes the careful planning of the same. Please inform yourself in advance at the local information center about the route and weather conditions. Depending on the season and weather conditions, this route may be blocked or interrupted
