ViaJacobi
Overview
Intro
On the Via Jacobi to Payerne, a St James’ cross erected in 1981 at the edge of the Belle-Croix forest has an eventful past. The distinctive sunken paths in this forest are evidence of the medieval link from Freiburg toPayerne.
Description
The hike does not start in Fribourg itself, but rather in Villars sur Glâne, a suburb of the canton’s capital. Since it was founded, this municipality has grown into a town. This is due to new arrivals from abroad and from other parts of French-speaking Switzerland, as well as various sectors of industry establishing themselves here. Soon you will cross the motorway and walk through alternating stretches of woodland and meadow with delightful names like Moncor, Verdilloud and Piamont.
After Noréaz, the path dives back into the forest. Then you will find an idyllic place to rest at Moulin de Prez, right by a bend in the river Arbogne. This 31-kilometre tributary of the Broye originates on a high ridge at Romont. Follow the course of the river northeast in the forested valley.
After around three and a half hours, you will reach Cousset and, a short while later, the beautiful Notre-Dame de Tours, a church of pilgrimage. This church is located in an isolated sport in an enclave of Vaud in the canton of Fribourg. Measuring around 150 by 100 metres in size, this enclave is no doubt one of the smallest in the world. However, the church there harbours an ancient shrine that was reconstructed in 1780 and restored in 1946. Soon after passing through the village of Corcelles-près-Payerne, the walk comes to an end in Payerne. This place is known for its former Cluniac monastery, founded by Bertha, Queen of Burgundy. The monumental abbey church, which dates back to the 11th century, dominates the town’s medieval centre. It is the largest example of Romanesque architecture in Switzerland and is home to a museum with paintings, sculptures and medieval artifacts, among other things.
