Description
Moudon is divided up into its original upper town, known as Le Bourg, and the lower town area built in the 13th century by the river Broye. This is where you will be walking towards when you exit the railway station. In doing so, you will catch a glimpse of the Church of Saint-Étienne, a triple-nave example of the Early and High Gothic architecture of French-speaking Switzerland. As well as the armoury, old hospital and town hall with its arcades, the town boasts several townhouses and patrician houses dating from the 16th to 18th centuries. Passing through the alleyways of the upper town, you will then descend to the river Broye. Follow the beautiful course of the river until you reach Bressonnaz.
Keep to the surfaced road all the way through meadows and stretches of woodland until you reach L’Ecorcheboeuf. After the next wooded section, a path crosses the river Bressonne. Covering around 16 kilometres, this river drains part of the Swiss Plateau in the canton of Vaud and forms part of the drainage basin of the Rhine. Passing the attractive Church of Montpreveyres, you will reach the village of the same name on the eastern side of the Jorat Plateau.
After a little over an hour in the woods, you will pass by a golf course, a riding school and a campsite at Chalet-à-Gobet. There is then a gentle descent, with beautiful views of the lake and the Savoy Alps beyond. But the scenery will only get a little wilder again once you have passed through this district and reach Le Bois Murat.
Walking along the Flon stream and under the motorway bridge, you will arrive at Lac de Sauvabelin. This lake was artificially dammed in 1889 and is surrounded by an ancient oak forest. There is also a restaurant here. If you choose to climb up the 35-metre-tall viewing tower, you will not regret it: the 360-degree panorama over Lausanne, Lake Geneva, the Alps, the Jura and the Swiss Plateau is magnificent. The next scenic spot is not far away at Le Signal. The name of this place relates to its far-reaching views: sentinels were once posted here to look out for hostile troops and raise the alarm (“signaler” in French). This leg then ends shortly afterwards at Château Saint-Maire in Lausanne city centre. This castle was built between 1397 and 1406, when it was common practice to build cube-shaped fortresses, as this suited both residential and defensive purposes.
