Intro
The reward for the steep climb to Höllchöpfli is the views along the high-level hike through forests and meadows. You pass unusual geological features and many mountain restaurants before reaching the Weissenstein – Solothurn’s balcony.
Description
Balsthal lies at almost 500 m above sea level. The most strenuous part of today’s hike comes right at the start. The path ascends more than 700 m within a short space of time. On reaching the Höllchöpfli, the trail stays at a relatively consistent altitude. On broad meadows, it crosses the Jura Crest and never fails to offer glorious views of the Swiss Alps. Long trail sections follow, that run through the forest and offer a pleasant contrast to the vastness of the Jura Crest Trail.
Doing the middle third of the hike on hot days, you might wish you were back in the shade of the forest, with the welcome cool it offers to anyone feeling a little frazzled.
Now, the scenery changes quite dramatically from tranquil and secluded nature to a loud surroundings buzzing with activity. Groups of screaming children run across the path, and joyous laughter fills the air. This is the suspension rope park in Balmberg. There are ten different courses in the adventure park, making Balmberg full of life.
All that remains is one last steady climb up the Weissenstein, the roof of Solothurn and end of this stage.
