Jura Crest Trail
Overview
Intro
On the way to the Belchenflue, various buildings and crests serve as reminders of when Switzerland was well fortified in the two world wars. After the hamlet of Bärenwil shortly ahead, head over the Tiefmatt to Roggen. Down below, Balsthal greets you with Neu-Falkenstein Castle and the paper factory.
Description
The leisurely start to today’s stage involves a steady climb to around 1,000 m above sea level. By the side of the trail you can notice crests with inscriptions on rocks and old bunkers. These remind of Switzerland’s role in the Second World War. The path goes through dense forest to Bärenwil, a hamlet that is a favoured starting point for cross-country skiing in winter. In summer, this village comes just before the two final and challenging ascents of this stage. So, remember to fill up your water bottles at the village fountain.
Before climbing up the Schnarz and Roggenflue, hikers must first pass the inn at Tiefmatt, which also offers accommodation. This is the final chance to stop and refuel, with the trail then leading relentlessly up to the Schnarz. There are hundreds of steps to climb, bringing you ever higher up the mountain. Following the strenuous ascent, the final stretch is a gradual incline to reach the Roggenflue and the fabulous views of the Swiss Plateau. The Alps stretch out along the horizon, and down below in the valley lies Balsthal, today's final destination. This is reached by a long, steep descent, dropping 500 m of altitude.
