It’s no wonder that the Moléson has a special place in the hearts of Fribourg’s citizens: the journey up to the panoramic peak is an adventure in itself. Once you reach the summit, you are greeted by wonderful 360° panoramic views of the Gruyère Pre-Alps and the Bernese and Valais Alps.
The Gruyère region is known not only for the small town of Gruyères and the world-famous cheese that bears its name, but also for the Moléson mountain, which can be seen from miles around. Two modern cable cars with panoramic windows connect the village of Moléson-sur-Gruyères with the Pre-Alpine peak. When you arrive at 2,002 metres above sea level, the whole of western Switzerland is at your feet: from Lake Geneva to the famous peaks of the Bernese Oberland, from Mont Blanc and the Jura to the Three Lakes region.
In addition to the magnificent panorama, a visit to Moléson is particularly worthwhile because of the wide range of leisure activities on offer:
Summer
In summer, adventurers can experience the thrill of a rapid ride down the summer toboggan run or try their skills in a downhill cart. A host of hiking trails invite visitors to explore the area on foot. Those with a head for heights can attempt one of the two via ferrata routes or enjoy the spectacular views on the Trematta ridge hike. The demonstration cheese dairy is well worth a visit, where you can learn what life was like for the cowherds in days gone by. Every day at 10 a.m. (May to September), the cheesemaker lifts his cheese from the copper vat and talks about his work.
Winter
In winter, the Moléson is a paradise for tobogganers, skiers and snowboarders. There is also plenty on offer for ski tourers and freeriders.
Tip: If you’re staying in Moléson, the Passe-Moléson is well worth getting. This all-inclusive pass covers cable cars, the toboggan run, downhill carts and much more besides!
