Museum Waltensburger Meister & Arcun ds tradiziun
Overview
Intro
Casa Cadruvi houses an exhibition on the 'Waltensburg Master' and a local history collection of everyday objects from the region, mainly from the 19th and 20th centuries.
The Waltensburg Master Museum conveys the Waltensburg Master's environment - the 14th century and artistic parallels - and shows his painting technique, "al fresco" painting, in a permanent exhibition. It is located in Waltensburg/Vuorz in the Surselva (Bündner Oberland) opposite the church of Waltensburg/Vuorz, where one of his most impressive works, the Passion, can be admired in all its splendor.
The village museum - Arcun da tradiziun in Romanesque - collects everyday objects, documents and photographs from the history of Waltensburg/Vuorz. Part of the collection - with a changing thematic focus - is exhibited in the Casa Cadruvi.
History of the museum
The museum was founded in the 1960s on the initiative of the village priest at the time, Martin Cavegn. In 1964, he organized an exhibition of old objects belonging to the people of Waltensburg/Vuorz and was thus able to educate the locals about the historical value of these objects. This exhibition led to the founding of the village museum, not least with the aim of countering the sale of furniture, tools and everyday objects to foreign traders with something that would enrich the village and be part of its history.
Initially, two rooms were rented in the former courthouse. In 1985, the museum moved to its current location in the lowest apartment of Casa Cadruvi ("Por Juventute House"), which the municipality made available to the museum. In 2012, the exhibition space of the Arcun da tradiziun was reduced due to the opening of the Museum Waltensburger Meister. The exhibition now changes its appearance regularly by focusing on special exhibitions. Previous exhibitions have focused on food and its production in the rural environment, the elementary school in Waltensburg/Vuorz and the living tradition of picture stories from the Waltensburg Master to the present day.
Collecting activities
As a local museum, the Arcun da tradiziun mainly collects objects from Waltensburg/Vuorz and its immediate surroundings, i.e:
- Objects that were made or used in the village
- Objects that were owned by a person, family or institution living in the village
- Objects from abroad with a connection to the village, e.g. by people who have emigrated. It must be possible to record and document this relationship to the village.
- Ceramics in the Arcun da tradiziun
Due to the focus of the collection, there are of course also ceramic objects in the collection, which on the whole fits in very well with the usual museum tradition of Graubünden and therefore offers few surprises. There are 63 objects: 2 faiences, 25 earthenwares, 22 earthenwares, 1 stoneware and 13 porcelains.
Dr. Andreas Heege recorded these objects in September 2020 on behalf of the CERAMICA Foundation and expertly dated and classified them. This means that scientific work has also found its way into the Arcun da tradiziun.
The CERAMICA Foundation has been dedicated to promoting art historical research in the field of ceramics since 1954. It is currently compiling a national inventory of publicly accessible collections of modern pottery vessels (1500-1950). This is presented online. The inventory of the Arcun da tradiziun can be found here.
The museum would like to thank the CERAMICA Foundation for this support and in particular Andreas Heege for his great efforts to make these ceramics accessible and for the pleasant collaboration.
Bakehouse and washhouse
The wood-fired bakehouse in the Sumvitg part of the village, which was also a washhouse, is part of the Arcun da tradiziun, together with its furnishings. It can be rented.
